Pictures, Pictures, Pictures!

Hello everybody,
Here are a bunch of pictures from last week. We have more pictures from the last three days, but we will put those up tomorrow. These first few pictures are from our last day in our Shell, WY segment. We learned about oil and went to see an oil rig.

Then we drove to Cody, WY and took a small detour to see the Bighorn Canyon and some wild horses, it was beautiful.

We spent the night in some little cabins and there was a pretty sunset.

We ate at Irma's Restaurant, Buffalo Bill's daughter. Cody loves Buffalo Bill.

In the morning some of us went to the Buffalo Bill Museum, it was really cool and they had a whole lot of stuff about the wild west. They had a live animal show with rattle snakes, they said there was man who needed 91 vials of anti-venom which cost $2,500 a piece!

Then we bought our cowboy hats!!

We swapped professors and headed to the K Bar Z ranch outside of Cooke City, WY. We had a pretty drive from Cody.

In the background is Heart Mountain, it is the result of a detachment fault where three kilometers of rock slid fifty kilometers out into the Bighorn Basin. Some scientists think it slid at half the speed of sound!

This is where we mapped for three or four days. It is called Henderson Mountain and it is part of the New World Mining District, where they mine for gold. Our goal for the mapping was to find the gold deposit.

Dev with his zapping gun!

Having fun in the van ride!

Andi and Reed showed us their dance moves during our lunch break.

Artsy shot of acid mine drainage.

Dave eating bear poop, don't worry Boo, he didn't actually eat it!

We drove to the Stillwater Mine to see an active platinum and palladium mine. We had a beautiful drive over the Beartooth plateau, and we got to stop on the top for pictures. Here are Claire and Dave.

Kelly and John.

We visited a deserted mining town at the top of the mining area. Ranee liked it.

Papa Blaine being Papa Blaine. We miss him a lot, he just left us and we might never see him again because this is his last term of graduate school at Dartmouth :((((((

Dave on an old mining cart track.

Pretty view.

Looking down on the mine.

Ari and Gerben.

We saw some deer on the side of the road.

One of our new TAs, Matt, is from Vermont. His parents have been road tripping around the country for nine months and they came by the K Bar Z. We got really excited when we saw Vermont plates!

On our off day we went back to the Beartooths and went on an amazing hike. It was 14 miles long at 10,000 feet and we had spectacular views all day!

That's a perfect reflection!

Shelby and Sam crossing the crick.

David Schatz and Ying Qi.

Reed got his bum in the way of our artsy shot!

Some more artsy shots.

Snack time.

Gerben tests and writes reviews for outdoor clothing companies so he has a bunch of us wear the clothes and see what we think. Reed and Izzy got to wear his jackets on the hike.
